Membership of the Federation is open to all non-profit national nutrition societies of countries in Africa and which has a constitution acceptable to the Federation council. One society from each country may join the Federation.

Application for membership (Requirements)

1.    A society wishing to join the Federation should forward to the Secretary General/President Application containing

2.    The constitution of the society

3.    A summary of activities of the society over the previous three years

4.    Evidence to show that the society is a national nutrition society of its country.

The secretary/President will present the completed applications to the  Federation Council to be considered and accepted provided at least 50% of the council members are in favour (indicated by mail).

The Federation of African Nutrition Societies (FANUS) has continued to maintain its popularity as a prestigious nutrition society that is keeping afloat despite the economic ebbs on the continent.

Website revamped

Our visibility worldwide has been greatly enhanced by the presence of the society online (www.fanus.org ), which has been revamped by the current Excutive Council led by Professor NNam Ngozi.  Also, our member’s email listserve has been active with latest information in the field of nutrition being sent out regularly by your Secretary General Dr Ella Compaore.

Membership

Our membership and partnership catchment is truly pan African and growing. Our membership and outlook catchment has continued to expand globally as evidenced by the recent collaborations, visitation and website hits and membership. Lately, African societies from Francophone, Anglophone, North Africa, Portuguese and Spanish speaking, have increased to express interest in associating with us. This perhaps implies increased visibility of the Society. Indeed statistics from our website show thousands of readership and other hits on the Society web pages. The secretariat will be pleased to share this information with whoever is interested.  

RESOURCE MOBILIZATION AND RELATED ISSUES

Raising funds for the Society remains a formidable task. It is increasingly evident that whereas many institutions deal in research as their mainstay business and require their staff to disseminate there outputs in high quality meetings such as the FANUS conferences, virtually none of them show interest in supporting the few surviving African societies. The Executive Council is making frantic efforts to source funding support from various institutions especially in Africa.

Rwanda Conference 2019

The current Council has awarded the Rwanda Nutrition Society to organize the 5th FANUS Conference in Kigali. Mr Venuste Muhamyankaka from Rwanda is coordinating the conference on behalf of FANUS.

E-learning Nutrition imitative

Dr Richmond Aryeteey on behalf of FANUS has, participated in the formulation of the e-learning nutrition platform. The platform is an international consortium of nutrition societies; the African Nutrition Society (ANS), the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), the Federation of African Nutrition Societies (FANUS), the Nutrition Society (NS and the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS). The aim of this e-learning platform is to provide nutrition e-learning materials for the education, training and professional development of scientists, students, practitioners and nutrition service providers in African countries.  We envisage a large section of the society members benefiting from this initiative. We invite you to attend the launch of the platform on Wednesday. 

SUGGESTIONS FOR FINANCIAL SOURCING SUSTAINABILITY

Indeed, the above strategies are entirely dependent on the generosity of the individuals who are the Members of the Board of Trustees and I suppose, they deserve applause. However, there were Society based strategies that were previously proposed way back in 1999 and reechoed in 2012 (refer to Prof. Paul Amuna’s handover report 2012 in Bloemfontein).  These included a Trust fund for the Society and to start a vibrant Journal (The African Nutrition Journal); and reserving a fraction of the registration fees at each conference towards publication of one or two journal issues. Indeed these would be more sustainable. We request that these proposals be re-mainstreamed into action.

Scope of the Congress

The conference provides a forum for nutrition and health scientists, policy makers, entrepreneurs, development partners, and other stakeholders in the nutrition, health, agriculture and food sectors to present their latest research findings. Also, the conference will act as an avenue to dialogue how to enhance better nutrition and health among Africans to serve as the foundation for sustainable human, social, and economic development.

Call for Abstracts

Abstracts submission is open up to 31st March 2019. The call of abstracts will be sent before end of 2018.  However, all abstracts relevant to the Congress theme or sub-themes should be written in English and not exceed 300 words. Authors should indicate which symposia there abstract pertains to. The presenting author should be underlined and contact information noted. Each abstract should contain a short introduction; purpose of the study/program; methods/approach used; summary of results; and major conclusions/ recommendations.
